Started in 1892 with 9 hectares of vines, now with fourth generation Jean-Claude in charge, the estate comprises 320 hectares over several appellations along with 800 hectares under contract for a negiociant business. The Claude Val wines are delicious and playful blends of many varieties, each varietal is vinified separately. De-stemmed, the Grenache and Merlot are vinified at 30C over 5 days, the Carignan and Syrah at 28C over 8 days. The four grapes are then blended and aged in a tank for four months. A glorious youthful deep red in colour, the nose is brambly and rich, with raspberry and spice notes. The palate has sweet generous fruit, with hints of anise, before a gentle, spicy finish. Match with grilled chicken, pork or lamb and grilled vegetables or stuffed bell peppers and medium strength cheeses.
